Scotland: about the flag

Scotland's flag is a white diagonal cross on a blue field, known as the Saltire. It is often described as the oldest national flag in Europe, with the cross of St Andrew appearing on seals as early as 1286.

Legend says that in 832, King Angus of the Picts saw a white cross in the sky before a battle against the Saxons. He vowed to make St Andrew the patron saint if he won. The Scots won, and the Saltire became the flag. Andrew was crucified on an X-shaped cross because he felt unworthy to die like Jesus.

In 1385, Scottish soldiers were ordered to wear the Saltire. Today it flies on government buildings and at sporting events. St Andrew's Day is celebrated on 30 November.
