Saudi Arabia: about the flag

Saudi Arabia's flag is the only national flag in the world with an inscription as its main design. The Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith, is written in white Thuluth script on a green field. Below it lies a white sword.

The flag is closely tied to the Al Saud family, which established the kingdom in 1932. The green field is associated with Islam and growth. The sword stands for justice and security. The Shahada reads: "لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله" — "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of Allah." The flag is manufactured with different obverse and reverse sides so the text and sword read correctly from right to left on both sides.

A royal decree in 1973 specified the design. In 2023, Saudi Arabia designated 11 March as Flag Day, marking the day in 1937 when King Abdulaziz approved the current design.
