São Tomé & Príncipe: about the flag

São Tomé and Príncipe adopted its flag on 5 November 1975, four months after gaining independence from Portugal. The design comes from the flag of the Liberation Movement, which had been used since 1972.

The flag uses the Pan-African colors of green, yellow, and red. The green stripes stand for the country's rich vegetation. The yellow band represents cocoa, one of the main agricultural products. The red triangle on the hoist side recalls the struggle for independence. Two black stars in the yellow band symbolize the two main islands, São Tomé and Príncipe.

The flag has remained unchanged since 1975. It flies on government buildings and at official ceremonies across the island nation.
