Samoa: about the flag
Samoa's flag was first hoisted on 24 February 1949, when the islands were a United Nations trust territory administered by New Zealand. It became the national flag on 1 January 1962, the day Samoa became the first Pacific island nation to gain independence.
The red field stands for courage. The blue canton represents freedom. The five white stars form the Southern Cross, a constellation that guided navigators for centuries. An earlier version of the flag, adopted in 1948, had only four stars, like New Zealand's flag. A fifth smaller star was added the following year to complete the constellation.
Samoa celebrates its independence on 1 June each year. The flag flies on government buildings and is a common sight at rugby matches, where the national team is known as Toa Samoa.
