Rwanda: about the flag
Rwanda changed its flag in 2001 to break with the past. The old flag, adopted in 1961, had a large black "R" in the center and was associated with the brutality of the 1994 genocide. The new flag was adopted on 25 October 2001.
The new flag has four horizontal bands: light blue on the top half, then yellow and green. A golden sun with twenty-four rays sits in the upper right corner. The blue stands for peace and happiness, the yellow for economic development and the sun, and the green for hope and prosperity. The sun represents enlightenment and the unity of the Rwandan people.
The flag was designed by Alphonse Kirimobenecyo. It was first raised on 31 December 2001, and it is flown on government buildings across the country.
