Romania: about the flag

Romania's flag is a vertical tricolor of blue, yellow, and red, with colors that trace back to the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. The first version of the modern flag appeared in 1848, during a wave of revolutions across Europe.

The blue band stands for liberty and the sky, the yellow for justice and the sun, and the red for brotherhood and the blood of heroes. The three colors also represent the three historical provinces of Romania: Transylvania, Wallachia, and Moldavia. The flag was officially adopted on 26 June 1848, and it was reaffirmed in 1866 and again in 1989, after the fall of the communist regime.

Romania celebrates National Flag Day on 26 June. The flag is flown on government buildings and at official events.
