Réunion: about the flag
Réunion has no official flag of its own. The French tricolor is the official flag and is flown on government buildings. But a local design called Lö Mahavéli has become widely used by residents and cultural groups.
The Lö Mahavéli was designed in 1974 by Guy Pignolet, with help from Didier Finck, who gave it its name. The design shows a volcano with rays of light, representing the island's volcanic origin and its energy. The colors are red, yellow, and green, with a blue and white section. The flag was not officially adopted, but it appears at cultural events and on some public buildings.
Réunion is a French overseas department, and the French flag remains the only official flag on the island.
