Portugal: about the flag

Portugal's flag was designed by the painter Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro and adopted on 30 June 1911, after the revolution of 5 October 1910 that overthrew the monarchy. The green and red colors come from the Republican Party and the Carbonária, a secret society that plotted the revolution.

The green stands for hope and the future, and the red for the blood shed by those who fought for the country. The armillary sphere in the center is an old navigational instrument that recalls Portugal's role in the Age of Discovery. Inside it is the Portuguese shield, with five small blue shields and seven castles, symbols of the country's early history.

The flag replaced the blue and white flag of the monarchy. It is flown on government buildings and at official ceremonies.
