Poland: about the flag

Poland's flag colors come from the coat of arms of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: a white eagle on a red shield. The white and red combination was first used as a national symbol in 1792, during the first anniversary of the Constitution of 3 May.

The white band stands for peace and hope, and the red band for the blood shed in the struggle for independence. The flag was officially adopted as the colors of the Polish State by the Sejm in 1831, during the November Uprising against Russian rule. After Poland regained independence in 1918, the flag was approved by the Legislative Sejm on 1 August 1919.

The current flag was adopted on 31 January 1980. Poland celebrates Flag Day on 2 May, and the flag flies on government buildings across the country.
