Pitcairn Islands: about the flag

Pitcairn's flag tells the story of the Bounty mutiny. The island was settled in 1790 by mutineers from HMS Bounty and their Tahitian companions, and many current residents are their descendants. The flag was adopted on 2 April 1984, after the island council suggested the design in 1980.

The flag is a British Blue Ensign with the Union Jack in the canton and the island's coat of arms on the fly. The shield shows a green field with a yellow anchor and a Bible, recalling the Bounty. Above the shield is a Pitcairn wheelbarrow with a flowering miro branch. The green, yellow, and blue represent the island rising from the ocean.

The flag is used on the island alongside the British flag. It flies on government buildings and is the only flag used on Pitcairn.
