Philippines: about the flag
The Philippine flag was first unfurled on 28 May 1898, after Filipino revolutionary forces defeated Spanish troops at the Battle of Alapan in Imus, Cavite. It was formally raised during the declaration of independence on 12 June 1898 in Kawit, Cavite.
The flag was designed by General Emilio Aguinaldo during his exile in Hong Kong. The blue band stands for peace and justice, the red for patriotism and valor, and the white triangle for equality and fraternity. The three yellow stars represent the three major island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The sun with eight rays stands for the first eight provinces that revolted against Spanish rule.
In times of war, the flag is flown with the red band on top. The design dates to 1897 and was formalized in 1898.
