Peru: about the flag

Peru's flag was created by General José de San Martín in 1820, shortly after he landed in Pisco with the Liberating Expedition. The first version had diagonal lines, but it was changed several times before the current vertical red-white-red design was established in 1825.

The red bands stand for the blood shed in the struggle for independence. The white band is for peace and the snow of the Andes. The national flag includes the coat of arms in the center, while the civil flag is plain. The coat of arms shows a vicuña, a cinchona tree, and a cornucopia, representing the country's wildlife, resources, and wealth.

The flag was officially adopted on 25 February 1825. Peru celebrates Flag Day on 7 June, the anniversary of the Battle of Arica.
