Paraguay: about the flag

Paraguay's flag is the only national flag in the world with two different emblems on its two sides. The front shows the national coat of arms, a yellow star within a green wreath. The back shows the seal of the treasury, a lion guarding a staff and a liberty cap.

The red, white, and blue stripes were adopted in 1842, based on the tricolor used during the early years of independence. Red stands for courage and patriotism, white for purity and peace, and blue for liberty and the sky. The two emblems were added later to give the flag a distinct identity.

The flag was officially approved on 25 November 1842. Paraguay celebrates Flag Day on 14 August, the anniversary of the day the tricolor was first raised in 1812.
