Papua New Guinea: about the flag

Papua New Guinea's flag was designed by Susan Karike Huhume, a 15-year-old schoolgirl who won a nationwide competition in 1971. Her design was chosen from hundreds of entries, and it was adopted on 1 July 1971, four years before the country gained independence from Australia.

The flag is divided diagonally. The upper half is red, with a yellow bird of paradise, the national bird. The lower half is black, with the Southern Cross constellation in white. The red and black colors are traditional in Papua New Guinean art and culture. The bird of paradise stands for the country's wildlife and its connection to the natural world. The Southern Cross is a navigational guide in the southern hemisphere.

The flag was raised for the first time on independence day, 16 September 1975, at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium in Port Moresby.
