Palestinian Territories: about the flag

Palestine's flag has been a symbol of national identity since the 1920s, long before there was a state to fly it over. The design is almost identical to the flag of the Arab Revolt, which Sharif Hussein raised in 1916 during the uprising against the Ottoman Empire.

The flag has four Pan-Arab colors: black, white, green, and red. These colors are linked to four historical Arab dynasties: the Abbasids, Umayyads, Fatimids, and Hashemites. The Palestine Liberation Organization adopted a modified version in 1964, changing the order of the stripes. The red triangle at the hoist is a distinctive feature.

On 15 November 1988, the PLO adopted the flag as the flag of the State of Palestine. It is now flown at the United Nations and by Palestinian communities around the world.
