Palau: about the flag
Palau's flag was chosen in a national contest in 1979, and the winning design came from Blau Skebong. The flag was adopted on 1 January 1981, when the island group separated from the United Nations Trust Territory and became a republic.
The light blue field stands for the Pacific Ocean that surrounds the islands. The large yellow disk is shifted slightly toward the hoist, a position that makes it look like a full moon rising. It represents the unity of the Palauan people and the end of foreign rule. The design is often compared to Bangladesh's flag, but the colors and meanings are entirely different.
Palau celebrates its Constitution Day on 9 July, and the flag flies on government buildings and at international events across the archipelago.
