Nigeria: about the flag

Nigeria's flag was designed in 1959 by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, a 23-year-old student who won a national competition. He originally included a red sun on the white stripe, but the judges removed it. The flag has three vertical bands: green, white, and green. The green represents the country's natural wealth and rich agricultural resources, while the white stands for peace and unity. The flag was first hoisted on 1 October 1960, the day Nigeria gained independence from Britain. It has remained unchanged since then and is one of the simplest national flags in the world.
