Netherlands: about the flag

The Dutch flag is perhaps the oldest tricolor in continuous use. Its colors come from William I, Prince of Orange, who led the Dutch revolt against Spain in the 16th century. The original flag was orange, white, and blue, but the orange stripe tended to fade to red, and by the 17th century red had become the permanent color.

The red stripe stands for courage, the white for peace, and the blue for loyalty. The flag is similar to the flag of Luxembourg, which uses a lighter blue. The Dutch flag is called the Statenvlag, or States Flag, and it was used by the Dutch East India Company on its ships.

The flag was officially adopted on 19 February 1937, though it had been in use for centuries. It flies on government buildings and is celebrated on King's Day.
