Namibia: about the flag

Namibia's flag was chosen from 835 designs submitted by the public. The winning design was created by Theo Jankowski and two other Namibians, and it was adopted on 21 March 1990, the day Namibia gained independence from South Africa.

The blue triangle stands for the Namibian sky and the Atlantic Ocean. The green triangle is for vegetation and agriculture. The red stripe represents the people, their heroism, and their determination to build equal opportunities. The white stripes on either side of the red are for peace. The golden sun with twelve rays stands for power and existence.

The design draws on the flag of SWAPO, the liberation movement that won the first elections. It has been the national flag since independence.
