Myanmar (Burma): about the flag

Myanmar changed its flag in 2010, replacing a design that had been used since 1974. The old flag had a blue canton with a cog wheel, a rice plant, and fourteen stars. The new flag is a simple tricolor of yellow, green, and red with a white five-pointed star in the center.

The yellow stands for solidarity, the green for peace and tranquility, and the red for courage and determination. The white star represents the union of the country. The design echoes an earlier flag used during the Japanese occupation in 1943, which was also yellow, green, and red, but with a peacock in the center.

The new flag was adopted on 21 October 2010, just before the country began a transition to civilian rule. It was first raised on that day.
