Mongolia: about the flag

Mongolia's flag has a symbol on it called the soyombo, a column of shapes that represents fire, the sun, the moon, the earth, water, and the yin-yang. The soyombo was designed by the artist Dodiin Choidog and has been part of the flag since 1911, though the flag has changed several times.

The red stripes stand for progress and prosperity. The blue stripe in the middle represents the eternal sky. The soyombo on the hoist-side red stripe is a national emblem that has been used for centuries. During the socialist era, a yellow star sat above the soyombo.

The current flag was adopted on 12 February 1992, when Mongolia adopted a new constitution. The star was removed. Mongolia celebrates State Flag Day on 10 July.
