Micronesia: about the flag

Micronesia's flag has four stars, one for each of the island groups that make up the federation: Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and Yap. The design was created by Gonzalo Santos and approved by the National Congress in 1965, when the islands were still a Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.

The light blue field stands for the Pacific Ocean. The four white stars are arranged in a diamond pattern and represent the four states. The flag was adopted on 10 November 1979, when the Federated States of Micronesia became self-governing.

The flag replaced an earlier design that had six stars, used by the Trust Territory. The current flag has been in use since independence in 1986, when the country signed a Compact of Free Association with the United States.
