Mauritius: about the flag

Mauritius has the only national flag in the world with four horizontal bands of color. The flag was designed by Gurudutt Moher, a retired teacher, whose contribution was recognized posthumously in 2018.

The red stripe stands for the struggle for freedom and independence. Blue is for the Indian Ocean that surrounds the island. Yellow is for the new light of independence and the golden sunshine. Green is for the agriculture and the lush vegetation of the island.

The flag was adopted on 12 March 1968, the day Mauritius became independent from Britain. It was designed in anticipation of independence and was first hoisted on that day. No changes have been made since.
