Mauritania: about the flag

Mauritania added two red stripes to its flag in 2017, the most recent change to the design. The flag had been green with a gold crescent and star since 1959, but a referendum that year approved a new constitution and a new flag.

The green field stands for Islam and hope. The gold crescent and star are traditional symbols of Islam, and the gold also recalls the sands of the Sahara. The red stripes were added to honor the blood shed in the struggle for independence from France.

The original flag was adopted on 1 April 1959, replacing the French tricolor. The new flag with the red stripes was first raised on 28 November 2017, during the country's independence day celebrations.
