Martinique: about the flag
Martinique has no official flag of its own. The French tricolor is the official flag, and it is flown on government buildings. But a red, green, and black flag has been used by independence and anti-colonial movements since the late 1960s, and it is widely seen as a symbol of the island's identity.
The red, green, and black flag was created by activists in Paris in 1968 and was first flown in Martinique in 1971. It is known as the Wouj-Vè-Nwè, meaning red-green-black. The colors are said to stand for struggle, hope, and the African heritage of the island's people.
In 2018, the local assembly held a competition to choose an official flag, but the winning design was not adopted by the French government. The French tricolor remains the only official flag.
