Marshall Islands: about the flag

The Marshall Islands flag was designed by Emlain Kabua, the wife of the country's first president. She won a national competition, and her design was adopted on 1 May 1979, when the islands began self-government.

The blue field stands for the Pacific Ocean. The orange stripe is for the Ralik Chain, the sunset, and courage. The white stripe is for the Ratak Chain, the sunrise, and peace. The star has twenty-four rays, one for each electoral district, and four larger rays for the main cultural centers. The diagonal band also suggests the equator, with the star showing the islands' position just north of it.

The flag became the national flag when the Marshall Islands gained independence in 1986. It flies on government buildings and on ships.
