Malta: about the flag

Malta's flag carries the George Cross, a British decoration awarded to the entire island in 1942 for bravery during the Second World War. It is one of the few flags in the world to show a foreign honor.

The white and red colors are said to have been given to Malta by Count Roger of Sicily in 1091, though some historians believe they come from the Knights of Saint John, who ruled the island from 1530 to 1798. The George Cross was added to the flag in 1943, and it sits in the upper hoist corner on a blue background that was later removed.

The flag was adopted on 21 September 1964, the day Malta became independent. The blue field was removed and the cross was given a red border.
