Maldives: about the flag
The Maldives flag was once a plain red banner. The earliest flags used by the sultans were red, a color chosen for visibility against the blue of the sea. A black and white striped hoist called the Dhandimathi was added later, and in 1932 a green panel with a white crescent appeared.
The red field stands for the blood of those who died defending the country. The green rectangle is for peace and prosperity, and the white crescent is a symbol of Islam. The current design was introduced in 1965, the year the Maldives became independent from Britain.
The crescent was turned to face the fly in 1954, and the flag has remained the same since. It is flown on government buildings and on the many islands that make up the country.
