Malaysia: about the flag

Malaysia's flag was designed by a 29-year-old architect named Mohamed Hamzah, who worked for the Public Works Department in Johor Bahru. His entry won a competition in 1949, beating 372 other designs.

The fourteen red and white stripes stand for the equal status of the thirteen states and the federal territories. The blue canton represents the unity of the Malay people. The yellow crescent and star are symbols of Islam, and yellow is the royal color of the Malay rulers. The flag is called Jalur Gemilang, meaning Stripes of Glory.

The flag was first raised on 26 May 1950. It was adopted for the Federation of Malaya, and it became the flag of Malaysia in 1963 when the country was formed.
