Madagascar: about the flag

Madagascar's flag was adopted two years before the country became independent, in 1958, as it prepared for a referendum on its status within the French Community. The design was a deliberate break from the French tricolor that had flown over the island.

The white vertical band and the red and green horizontal bands carry a story that reaches back to the Merina kingdom, whose royal colors were red and white. The green is said to represent the Hova, the former peasant class, and today it also stands for hope. Red is for sovereignty, and white for purity.

The flag was first hoisted on 14 October 1958. It has remained unchanged since independence in 1960, and it flies on government buildings and at sporting events across the island.
