Macao SAR China: about the flag
Macao's flag was chosen before the territory even returned to China. A professor of arts and crafts, Xiao Hong, won the design competition in 1999, and the flag was raised for the first time on 20 December that year, the day Macao became a Special Administrative Region.
The light green field stands for peace and vitality. The white lotus has three petals, one for the peninsula and each of the two islands that make up Macao. Below it, a stylized bridge and water recall the Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge and the sea that surrounds the territory. Five gold stars echo the flag of China, showing the relationship between Macao and its sovereign state.
The flag is flown on government buildings and at official ceremonies. It is also common to see it alongside the national flag of China at schools and public events.
