Liechtenstein: about the flag

Liechtenstein's flag looks simple—blue over red—but it has a crown that tells a story. In 1936, the country's Olympic team noticed their flag was identical to Haiti's. The following year, they added a golden crown to the blue band to tell them apart.

The blue and red colors come from the livery of the princely household in the 18th century. The crown stands for the unity of the people and the prince. Blue is said to represent the sky, and red the evening fires lit in homes. The crown was a practical fix that became a permanent symbol.

The flag was adopted on 24 June 1937, with the crown added. A slightly modified crown design was adopted in 1982. It flies over the prince's castle in Vaduz and on government buildings.
