Libya: about the flag

Libya's current flag is actually a restored old one. It was first used by the Kingdom of Libya from 1951 to 1969, then replaced by Muammar Qaddafi's plain green banner. When Qaddafi was overthrown in 2011, the red, black, and green flag with a crescent and star returned.

The colors stand for Libya's three historic regions: red for Fezzan, black for Cyrenaica, and green for Tripolitania. The crescent and star represent Islam. The black band is twice the width of the others, a detail that honors the region of Cyrenaica, where the independence movement was strong.

The flag was reintroduced on 27 February 2011 by the National Transitional Council. It is used by the internationally recognized government and flown at Libyan embassies abroad.
