Liberia: about the flag

Liberia's flag was designed and hand-stitched by a group of seven women in 1847. They were led by Susannah Elizabeth Lewis, and their work created a banner that closely resembles the United States flag, a nod to the country's origins as a settlement for freed slaves.

The eleven stripes stand for the eleven signers of the Liberian Declaration of Independence. The blue square represents the African mainland, and the single white star stands for Liberia as the only independent Western-style state in Africa at the time. Red symbolizes the blood shed in the struggle for independence.

The flag was adopted on 26 July 1847. Liberia celebrates National Flag Day on 24 August, and the flag's design has remained largely unchanged since it was first sewn.
