Lesotho: about the flag

Lesotho's flag features a black mokorotlo, a traditional Basotho hat, in the center. The hat is a national symbol, worn by men and used as a logo for the country. The current flag was adopted on 4 October 2006, the 40th anniversary of independence.

The blue stripe stands for sky and rain. The white is for peace. The green represents the land. The design replaced an earlier flag that showed a shield, spear, and club, which some felt was too militaristic. The new flag was meant to reflect a peaceful orientation for the country.

Lesotho's national motto is "Khotso, Pula, Nala"—Peace, Rain, Prosperity. The flag is flown on government buildings and at sporting events, and the mokorotlo also appears on the country's coat of arms.
