Lebanon: about the flag

Lebanon's flag is meant to be neutral. It was designed in 1943 to avoid favoring any religious group, which is why it uses a cedar tree rather than a cross or crescent. The cedar is an ancient symbol of the country, mentioned in the Bible and used by the Phoenicians.

The red stripes stand for the blood shed in the struggle for independence. The white stripe is for peace and the snow on Lebanon's mountains. The green cedar represents immortality and resilience. The flag was designed to unite Christians and Muslims under a single national symbol.

The flag was adopted on 7 December 1943, shortly before Lebanon gained independence from France. It is flown on government buildings and by citizens, and the cedar also appears on the national airline and sports teams.
