Laos: about the flag
Laos has one of the few communist flags without a star. Instead, a white circle sits at the center of red and blue stripes. The flag was designed in 1945 by Maha Sila Viravong, a scholar and nationalist who wanted a symbol for the Lao Issara independence movement.
The red stripes stand for the blood shed in the struggle for freedom. The blue band represents the Mekong River and the country's prosperity. The white disk is said to be the full moon over the Mekong, and also the unity of the Lao people under the revolutionary party. The flag was first used by the Pathet Lao during the civil war.
It became the national flag on 2 December 1975, when the monarchy was abolished and the Lao People's Democratic Republic was proclaimed.
