Kuwait: about the flag

Kuwait's flag colors come from a poem by Safie Al-Deen Al-Hali. The verses give each band a meaning: white for our deeds, black for our battles, green for our fields, and red for our past.

The flag has three horizontal stripes—green, white, and red—with a black trapezoid on the hoist side. It replaced an earlier red flag with a white crescent and star. The design follows the Arab Revolt flag of World War I, a common template for Arab states, but Kuwait gave it its own meaning through the poem.

Kuwait adopted the flag on 7 September 1961 and raised it for the first time on 24 November that year, after gaining independence from Britain. It flies on government buildings and at international events, and the colors also appear on the country's coat of arms.
