Kenya: about the flag

Kenya's flag carries a battlefield memory. The black, red and green with a white-edged shield and crossed spears began life as the flag of KANU, the party that led the Mau Mau uprising and the march to independence; the Maasai shield and spears were added to speak of the defense of freedom.

Black is for the people of Kenya, red for the blood shed in the struggle, green for the land and its wealth, and the white fimbriation for peace. The shield is a Maasai warrior's shield, a design every Kenyan schoolchild recognizes.

The flag was adopted on 12 December 1963, independence day, and Uhuru day is still 12 December: the flag flies over Nairobi's Uhuru Gardens and the mausoleum of Jomo Kenyatta, the party's leader who became the first president.
