Kazakhstan: about the flag

Kazakhstan's flag is a steppe sky: turquoise blue, a color once sacred to Turkic peoples, crossed by a band of golden national ornament, with a golden sun and a soaring eagle beneath it.

The eagle is the golden steppe eagle, symbol of freedom, power and the flight toward the future; the sun stands for life and energy. The ornamental band at the hoist uses the koshkar-muiz, the curled ram's-horn pattern Kazakh craftswomen weave into carpets.

The flag replaced the Soviet Kazakh banner on 4 June 1992, just months after independence, one of the last Soviet republic flags to fall. Kazakhstan keeps 4 June as Day of State Symbols, when the flag, emblem and anthem share a birthday, and it flies today over Astana's futuristic skyline and the endless grass beyond.
