Jordan: about the flag

Jordan's flag is the banner of the Great Arab Revolt of 1916, still flying more than a century later. The black, white and green bands remember the Arab dynasties of history, the Abbasids, Umayyads and Fatimids, and the red chevron stands for the Hashemite family that led the uprising against the Ottoman Empire.

When the revolt's flags needed telling apart, Jordan added a white seven-pointed star in the red triangle: one point for each verse of the Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Quran, and a mark that made the banner unmistakably Jordanian.

The flag flew over the emirate that became Jordan in the 1920s, and the kingdom celebrates it on 16 April, Flag Day, the anniversary of the 1928 adoption. It flies over Amman's hills and the port of Aqaba, the last flag of the Arab Revolt still ruling a state.
