Jersey: about the flag
Jersey's flag is England's in disguise, almost. It flies the red cross of St George, but in 1981 the island added a red saltire behind the ancient shield of three gold lions, the arms of Normandy's dukes and England's kings. Jersey had carried those lions since the Middle Ages; the saltire was the new stitch, added so Jersey's flag would not vanish among England's at sea.
The effect is subtle: from a distance it is St George's cross; up close, it is Norman. That suits an island whose loyalties run to the Crown rather than to England: Jersey was part of the Duchy of Normandy when William conquered England in 1066, and it kept the connection when the king lost his French lands.
The flag was adopted on 7 April 1981, and it flies over St Helier's harbor, the castle and the parliament of this stubborn little bailiwick.
