Japan: about the flag
Japan's flag is a single red disc on white, and it says the same thing as the country's name. Nihon, or Nippon, means "origin of the sun", which is why Japan is called the Land of the Rising Sun.
The flag is known as Nisshōki, the "sun-mark flag", or Hinomaru, the "circle of the sun". A red disc on white was chosen in 1854 to mark Japanese ships, which needed a flag of their own once foreign vessels began to arrive in Japanese waters. Red is often read as sincerity and passion, and white as honesty and purity. The disc sits in the middle of the flag.
For well over a century the Hinomaru was the national flag only by custom. It became the official national flag by law in 1999, with the Act on National Flag and Anthem.
