Jamaica: about the flag

Jamaica's flag took a committee to make, deliberately. As independence approached in 1962, leaders of both political parties sat on the design committee together, wanting a flag no faction could claim. They chose black, green and gold, pan-African colors, but arranged in a saltire no other flag used.

Black stands for the strength and creativity of the people, gold for the sun and the wealth of the land, green for hope and agriculture, and the diagonal cross points to the future in four directions. The committee considered hundreds of designs before settling on this one.

The flag was adopted on 6 August 1962, independence day, and Jamaica still celebrates 6 August as its birthday. The design has never been changed: the committee got it right the first time, and Jamaicans fly it from London to Kingston.
