Italy: about the flag

Italy's tricolor is older than Italy. It was first raised on 7 January 1797 in Reggio Emilia as the flag of the Cispadane Republic, the short-lived sister republic Napoleon sponsored in the Po valley, the first Italian state to fly green, white and red.

The Risorgimento made it the banner of unification: Garibaldi's volunteers and Cavour's diplomats alike marched under it, and when the kingdom of Italy was proclaimed in 1861, the tricolor simply moved from the revolution to the throne. Green for hope, white for faith, red for charity is the traditional reading, though Italians mostly call it il Tricolore and let the colors speak for themselves.

The flag was confirmed by the 1946 referendum that ended the monarchy, and the republic celebrates it on 7 January, Tricolor Day, the flag's 1797 birthday.
