Israel: about the flag
Israel's flag is a prayer shawl stretched across the sky. The blue stripes and white field deliberately echo the tallit, the fringed garment Jewish men wrap themselves in at prayer, a design David Wolffsohn prepared for the First Zionist Congress in 1897, when Theodor Herzl's movement needed a flag.
At the center sits the Star of David, the six-pointed shield of the Jewish people for centuries, here set between the stripes like a jewel in cloth. After two millennia of statelessness, the flag answered Herzl's call for a banner of return.
The state adopted it on 28 October 1948, five months after independence. It flies from every public building, and on Independence Day it appears on balconies, cars and cupcakes across the country.
