Iraq: about the flag

Iraq's flag keeps rewriting itself. The red-white-black pan-Arab tricolor came to Baghdad in 1963, when revolution brought the colors of the 1952 Egyptian revolution west; three green stars then stood for the ruling party's slogan, unity, freedom, socialism.

In January 1991, with war raging, Saddam Hussein's government added the words Allahu Akbar between the stars, in what was said to be the president's own handwriting. After 2003 the stars came off and the calligraphy changed to stately Kufic script, settling the flag in its current form, adopted on 22 January 2008.

The colors remain the pan-Arab set: red for struggle and courage, white for the future, black for the battles of the past, the green script for Islam. Iraqis debate new designs constantly, but this flag still flies over Baghdad and the parliament.
