Iran: about the flag

Iran's flag hides words in plain sight. In the center sits a red emblem that is actually the word Allah written so stylized it looks like a flame or a tulip; along the inner edges of the green and red bands, the words Allahu Akbar, God is greatest, repeat 22 times in tiny Kufic script.

The green-white-red tricolor itself is much older than the Islamic Republic: it flew with the lion-and-sun emblem from the constitutional revolution of 1906 until 1979. After the revolution the new government kept the stripes and replaced the symbols. Green is for Islam, white for peace, red for courage and sacrifice, and the 22 takbirs remember 22 Bahman, the February day in 1979 when the revolution triumphed.

The flag was adopted on 29 July 1980 and flies on 11 February, revolution day, over Tehran's Azadi Square and from millions of windows.
