Iceland: about the flag

Iceland's flag was designed by Matthías Þórðarson, a librarian who later became the country's first national archivist. He put a red cross inside a white cross on a blue field, borrowing the Scandinavian cross shape from Denmark.

The colors carry a simple story: blue for the mountains, white for ice, and red for the fire of volcanoes. The flag was first adopted by royal decree on 19 July 1915, when Iceland was still part of Denmark. It became the national flag on 1 December 1918, when Iceland became a separate kingdom.

When Iceland declared itself a republic on 17 June 1944, the flag was formally adopted again. The only change was a slightly darker shade of blue.
