Hungary: about the flag

Hungary's red-white-green tricolor rose with the 1848 revolution, when Hungarians fought the Habsburg empire and made the three bars the banner of the nation: red for strength, white for fidelity, green for hope.

The twentieth century kept editing it. The communist state that arrived in 1949 added the coat of arms to the center, and in 1956, during the uprising, Hungarians famously cut the emblem out of the middle of their flags, leaving the flag with a hole as the revolution's most haunting symbol.

After the uprising the government restored the plain tricolor, and it has flown unchanged ever since, now described in the constitution. Hungarians raise it on 15 March, the anniversary of the 1848 revolution, and on 23 October, remembering 1956, when the cut-out flags hung from the bridges of Budapest.
